Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) outclassed Punjab Kings (PBKS) by 33 runs in the 49th match of the IPL 2026 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad. After being invited to bat first, Sunrisers Hyderabad posted a massive total of 235/4 in 20 overs with the help of explosive batting performances from Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, Heinrich Klaasen and Ishan Kishan.
Travis Head smashed 38 runs from just 19 balls, while Abhishek Sharma hammered 35 off 13 deliveries. Klaasen continued his outstanding form with 69 off 43 balls, and Kishan scored 55 from 32 balls after surviving multiple chances. Nitish Kumar Reddy added late fireworks with an unbeaten 29 off 13 balls. Yuzvendra Chahal (1/32 in 4 overs) was the most successful bowler for Punjab Kings.
While chasing, Punjab Kings lost Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh early. When Eshan Malinga dismissed Shreyas Iyer in the fourth over, Punjab Kings were struggling at 23/3. Marcus Stoinis and Cooper Connolly tried to build a partnership, but Shivang Kumar dismissed Stoinis in the seventh over.
Cooper Connolly fought alone and played a superb knock of 107 runs off just 59 balls. In the end, his efforts fell short as Punjab Kings managed to score 202/7 in 20 overs. Pat Cummins (2/34 in 4 overs) remained the most successful bowler for Sunrisers Hyderabad.
With this win, Sunrisers Hyderabad moved to the top of the table with 14 points, while Punjab Kings suffered their third consecutive defeat and stayed on 13 points. Sunrisers Hyderabad also maintained their unbeaten record while defending targets above 220 in the IPL.
Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma Give SRH Flying Start
SRH once again attacked aggressively during the powerplay. The opening pair of Head and Abhishek dominated Punjab’s bowlers from the beginning. Abhishek started the assault against Arshdeep Singh and Marco Jansen with powerful strokes all around the ground. Head soon joined the attack and smashed consecutive sixes.
Hyderabad crossed 50 runs in only 3.2 overs and ended the powerplay at 79/1. Punjab finally got a breakthrough when Lockie Ferguson dismissed Abhishek after a mistimed shot landed safely in the hands of Shreyas Iyer.
Punjab’s Poor Fielding Hurts Them Again
Punjab’s fielding errors completely changed the match. Head coach Ricky Ponting admitted during the game that catching had become “a bit of a virus” for the team. Yuzvendra Chahal dismissed Head soon after the powerplay, but Punjab failed to grab other important chances.
Kishan received three lifelines after Punjab dropped him twice and missed a stumping opportunity when he was on 9, 18 and 19. Klaasen also survived after a dropped catch on 9. Both batters punished Punjab heavily.
Kishan gradually settled down and rebuilt momentum with Klaasen. The pair added 88 runs together in eight overs. Kishan reached his fifty in 28 balls after smashing three consecutive sixes in one over.
Klaasen and Reddy Finish Strong
Klaasen accelerated brilliantly in the final overs. He completed his half-century in 32 balls and attacked the bowlers freely at the death. At the other end, Nitish Kumar Reddy played a crucial cameo. He smashed boundaries regularly and provided the finishing touch to Hyderabad’s innings. SRH crossed 235 after a strong finish in the final overs.
Punjab’s Top Order Collapses Early
Punjab needed a strong start while chasing such a huge target, but their top order failed badly. SRH captain Pat Cummins produced smart tactics to remove opener Priyansh Arya in the very first over.
Soon after, Nitish Kumar Reddy dismissed Prabhsimran Singh with the first ball of his spell. Cummins completed an excellent running catch. Shreyas Iyer also departed cheaply after mistiming a delivery from Eshan Malinga. Punjab slipped to 57/3 inside the powerplay and never fully recovered.
Connolly Fights Alone with Maiden Century
Despite wickets falling regularly, Cooper Connolly continued fighting for Punjab. The young batter impressed throughout the innings and kept the chase alive for some time. He attacked Cummins and Malinga confidently and brought up his fifty in 34 balls. However, Punjab kept losing wickets at the other end. Marcus Stoinis, Suryansh Shedge and Shashank Singh failed to provide enough support.
SRH bowlers slowed down the scoring rate with clever slower balls and disciplined spin bowling from Harsh Dubey and Shivang Kumar. Cooper Connolly eventually completed his maiden century in any format during the final over. He remained unbeaten on 107 from 59 balls.
However, no other Punjab batter crossed 28 runs, and that ultimately decided the match.
Dropped catches proved costly for Punjab Kings as Sunrisers Hyderabad secured a dominant 33-run victory on Wednesday and climbed to the top of the IPL points table.
Punjab dropped three catches and missed a stumping during the match. In contrast, Hyderabad held onto most of their important chances in the field. The difference showed in the final result as SRH defended a huge total successfully despite a fighting century from Cooper Connolly. Stay tuned with JUSZNEWS for regular updates!
