A small plane carrying skydivers crashed into a wooded area in southern New Jersey on Wednesday evening, injuring at least 15 people, according to officials.
Plane Overran Runway Before Crash
The crash happened at Cross Keys Airport, which lies around 33.8 kilometers southeast of Philadelphia. The Cessna 208B aircraft reportedly ran off the end of the runway and crashed into nearby trees.
A spokesperson for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed the plane was carrying 15 people and said the agency is now investigating the incident.
Emergency Teams Rushed to the Scene
Aerial footage showed the damaged aircraft surrounded by broken debris in the woods. Emergency responders, including fire trucks and rescue vehicles, quickly gathered at the crash site.
Injured Passengers Taken to Hospital
Wendy A. Marano, a spokesperson for Cooper University Hospital, said that three people were being evaluated at the hospital’s trauma center in Camden. Another eight people with less serious injuries were being treated in the emergency room.
She added that four more patients, all with “minimal injuries,” were awaiting further evaluation. However, she did not share details about the exact types of injuries.
Marano also said that teams from the hospital’s EMS and trauma department were already present at the crash location to assist.
No Comment from Skydive Operator
When contacted, someone answering the phone at Cross Keys Airport said they had no details and directed all inquiries to Skydive Cross Keys, a skydiving business operating at the airport. The company did not respond to an email from the Associated Press asking for a statement.
Public Asked to Avoid the Area
In a post on Facebook, Gloucester County Emergency Management advised residents to stay away from the area so that emergency vehicles could easily access the crash site.
