India Women thrashed England Women by six wickets in the fourth T20I of the five-match series at Old Trafford. With this win, the Indian women's cricket team secured their first-ever T20I series victory in England. Radha Yadav and Shree Charani trapped the English batters in their web of spin, setting the stage for India.
When India came out to chase the target, Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma gave a solid and blazing start that frustrated the England bowlers. Jemimah Rodrigues completed the formalities and sealed the win for India in the 17th over, marking another milestone just ahead of the Women’s T20I World Cup 2025.
Spinners Lead the Charge
The win at Old Trafford was driven by India’s spin duo, Radha Yadav and N Shree Charani, who bowled tight spells to keep England to a modest 126 for 7. The pair shared four wickets between them, giving away just 45 runs in their combined eight overs. This came after England chose to bat first for the second time in a row, but failed to build any momentum.
Deepti Sharma’s Record-Breaking Moment
India took control early in the field. Deepti Sharma struck a major blow in the sixth over, dismissing Sophia Dunkley. Deepti outfoxed Dunkley in the air, and Radha Yadav took a sharp diving catch at point. With this wicket, Deepti surpassed Nida Dar to become the highest wicket-taking spinner in women’s T20Is.
Earlier, Charani had already removed Danni Wyatt-Hodge, who mistimed a shot to long-on after scoring off her first few deliveries.
Middle Overs Belong to India
Tammy Beaumont tried to counterattack by hitting Sneh Rana for two well-placed boundaries. However, her resistance was brief as she fell to Radha Yadav attempting a big hit. Moments later, Alice Capsey was trapped lbw trying a reverse sweep against Charani, who impressed throughout her spell. By the 15th over, England had collapsed to 93 for 5, after being 68 for 2.
Ecclestone Tries to Revive England
England’s innings dragged through the middle overs. From the 11th to the 19th over, they didn’t hit a single boundary. Poor running between the wickets and confusion led to Charlie Dean being run out. India's fielding stood out — they cut angles sharply, caught well, and kept the pressure on. Reddy, especially, took three catches at long-on.
In her 100th T20I, Sophie Ecclestone broke the boundary drought by hitting Amanjot Kaur to midwicket. She followed it with two sixes off Deepti Sharma in the final over, which yielded 16 runs. However, England’s final score of 126 was never going to be enough.
Dominant Start with the Bat
India’s response was swift and powerful. Openers Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana attacked from the start. They smashed nine fours in just the first four overs, while England had only managed eight boundaries in their entire innings. The opening pair stitched together a 56-run stand in seven overs, setting the tone for a comfortable chase.
Shafali Strikes Back
Shafali Verma answered her critics in style. After poor scores in earlier matches and being dropped from the ODI squad, she played with intent. She scored 14 runs in the second over alone, hitting short balls with power and confidence. Mandhana supported her well, and their half-century stand in the seventh over put England under pressure. Although Shafali was dismissed for 31, her aggressive start set up the game.
Middle-Order Finish
Mandhana also fell soon after, slicing a catch to short third. A quiet patch followed as India didn’t hit a boundary for almost seven overs. It was Jemimah Rodrigues who broke the silence with a lofted shot off Lauren Bell. At the other end, Harmanpreet Kaur found it difficult to connect and was tested by Ecclestone, who bowled a crafty spell and kept her under check.
Eventually, when India needed 27 off 34 balls, Harmanpreet broke free with a boundary over extra cover. She followed it up with another hit to deep square leg, easing the pressure.
Rodrigues Seals the Win
Although Harmanpreet didn’t finish the match herself, Rodrigues ensured there were no late hiccups. She stayed unbeaten on 27 and finished the game with a neat paddle shot. The pair had added 48 runs off 42 balls, making sure India didn’t stumble as they had earlier in the series. The team won with 18 balls remaining, sealing a historic series win.
Brief Scorecard
Deepti Sharma, Radha Yadav, and Shree Charani bowled brilliantly at Old Trafford. They gave away just 74 runs in 12 overs and took five wickets together, which made a big impact. Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma batted exceptionally well, adding 56 runs in the first seven overs and shaking the confidence of the England bowlers. Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues did the rest. This victory reflects India’s growing confidence in T20I cricket, especially in overseas conditions. Their blend of aggressive batting, disciplined spin, and sharp fielding is a promising sign as they gear up for the T20I World Cup in 2025. Stay tuned with JUSZNEWS for regular updates!
