Carlos Alcaraz stayed on course for a third straight Wimbledon title after a solid win over American Taylor Fritz in the semifinals on Friday, July 11. The 21-year-old Spaniard defeated Fritz 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 in a match that lasted 2 hours and 49 minutes.
With this victory, Alcaraz is just one win away from joining an elite club of tennis legends — Bjorn Borg, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic — who have won three consecutive men’s singles titles at Wimbledon.
Sixth Major Final, Still Unbeaten
Alcaraz extended his winning streak at Wimbledon to 20 matches. This win also marked his sixth Grand Slam final appearance. Notably, he has never lost a major final, holding a perfect 5-0 record so far.
His run this year has been exceptional. He has already claimed titles at the Italian Open, the French Open, and the Queen’s Club Championships, bringing his current winning streak to 24 matches.
Dominant Start from Alcaraz
Alcaraz began the match strongly. He broke Fritz early and held serve to go up 2-0 in the first set. While Fritz improved his serving later, he couldn't break back. Alcaraz got a set point at 5-3, 40-30, which Fritz saved. But the Spaniard wrapped up the set in 35 minutes, again holding serve to love.
Alcaraz dominated on his first serve, winning all 13 points in the first set — a perfect 100 percent success rate.
Fritz Fights Back in Second Set
In the second set, Fritz finally won a point on Alcaraz’s first serve. Still, Alcaraz held his nerve and leveled the set at 2-2. He then held Fritz to love in the next game. Although Fritz got his first break point in the eighth game, Alcaraz saved it to stay level at 4-4.
However, Alcaraz stumbled in the 12th game. He dropped four points in a row on serve, allowing Fritz to break and win the set 7-5. This leveled the match at one set apiece.
Alcaraz Regains Control in Third Set
Fritz started the third set strong by holding Alcaraz to love. But Alcaraz responded immediately. He held serve to level at 1-1, then broke Fritz to go up 2-1. He quickly consolidated the break and led 3-1.
Alcaraz stayed in control. At 5-3, 40-15, he earned two set points. Fritz saved one with an ace, but Alcaraz took the second and closed the set.
The Fourth Set and a Nervy Tie-Break
In the fourth set, Fritz showed some resistance. He saved a break point in the sixth game and stayed close. Eventually, he pushed the set into a tie-breaker.
Alcaraz jumped ahead to 4-1 in the tie-break. However, Fritz fought back, winning five straight points to earn two set points at 6-4. But the Spaniard dug deep, saved both set points, and then won the next four points to finish the match.
Alcaraz roared in celebration as he sealed the win and booked his place in the Wimbledon final.
