Citizens Across Israel Call for War’s End and Hostages’ Release
Israelis protested nationwide demanding an end to the Gaza war and the release of hostages as the military prepares a new offensive.

People across Israel held demonstrations demanding an end to the Gaza conflict and the release of hostages on Sunday, August 17, 2025. The protests came as the Israeli military prepared for a new offensive in the Palestinian territory.

Last week, Israel’s security cabinet approved plans to capture Gaza City. The conflict has lasted nearly two years and caused a severe humanitarian crisis.

The war began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas attacked southern Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages. Israeli authorities say 49 remain held in Gaza, including 27 confirmed dead.

Protests Disrupt Cities and Call for Action

In Tel Aviv, demonstrators gathered at Hostage Square, displaying a giant Israeli flag with images of hostages. They blocked roads, including the main highway between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, and set tires on fire.

Police intervened, arrested 32 people, and warned against further public disruptions. Protest organizers and groups representing hostage families called for a general strike. As a result, many businesses in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv remained closed for the day.

“I think it’s time to end the war. It’s time to release all of the hostages. And it’s time to help Israel recover and move towards a more stable Middle East,” said Doron Wilfand, a 54-year-old tour guide in Jerusalem.

Hamas Criticizes Israeli Evacuation Plans

Meanwhile, Hamas condemned Israel’s plan to relocate residents from Gaza City. The group called it a “new wave of genocide and displacement” and said tents and shelters in southern Gaza were a “blatant deception” to hide an impending military assault.

The Israeli military stated it would move residents from combat zones to southern Gaza and provide tents and supplies “to ensure their safety.”

Humanitarian Crisis Worsens

The planned offensive raises international concern over Gaza City, home to 2.2 million people. Gaza’s health ministry reports over 61,000 Palestinians killed so far. The fighting has displaced most of Gaza’s population and left much of the enclave in ruins.

The conflict also caused a hunger crisis and damaged hospitals, schools, and essential infrastructure.

Background: Ongoing Conflict

The October 2023 Hamas attack triggered Israel’s continued military response. About 20 of the remaining hostages are believed to be alive.

The protests reflect growing frustration in Israel over the prolonged war and the humanitarian toll on both Israelis and Palestinians.
