Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he spoke with US President Donald Trump and discussed the situation with Iran. He said Trump believes recent military successes by Israel and the US could help achieve a negotiated settlement.
Netanyahu said, “President Trump believes there is a chance to leverage the tremendous achievements of the IDF and the US military in order to realise the war’s objectives in an agreement — an agreement that will safeguard our vital interests.”
Israel Continues Military Operations
At the same time, Netanyahu made it clear that Israel will keep up its military campaign. He said, “We will protect our vital interests under any circumstances.” He added, “At the same time, we continue to strike both in Iran and in Lebanon.”
He warned Iran to prepare for further attacks. Netanyahu also said Israeli forces are targeting Iran’s key capabilities. He stated that operations are “crushing the missile program and the nuclear program” and are also “inflicting heavy damage on Hezbollah”.
He added, “Just a few days ago we eliminated two more (Iranian) nuclear scientists, and this is not the end.”
Trump Talks About “Productive” Conversations
Meanwhile, Donald Trump said the US had engaged in discussions with Iran. He described the talks as “very good and productive” and aimed at ending hostilities in the Middle East.
“I am pleased to report that the United States of America, and the country of Iran, have had, over the last two days, very good and productive conversations regarding a complete and total resolution of our hostilities in the Middle East,” Trump posted.
Ultimatum to Iran and Delay in Action
Trump’s comments came shortly before a deadline he had set for Iran. He had warned Tehran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face US strikes on its power infrastructure.
However, he later delayed the planned action, signalling a possible diplomatic opening.
Confusion Over Talks with Iran
Reports suggested that Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf may have been involved in discussions with the US. However, Ghalibaf denied this. He said “no negotiations” were taking place.
Iranian media also rejected the claims. It said there had been no contact with Trump, either directly or indirectly. A report stated, “There was no contact- whether direct or indirect- with Trump. Sources said that he backed down after being warned that their targets would include power plants across West Asia.”
Situation Remains Tense
The situation remains uncertain. The US signals possible diplomacy, while Israel continues military strikes. Meanwhile, Iran denies any talks. As a result, tensions across the region remain high with no clear resolution yet.
